About This Project
Instead of waiting for fiber or cellular buildout — which telecom economics will never justify for low-density rural populations — deploy a vertically integrated stack: (1) Low-earth-orbit satellite terminals at school sites for connectivity backhaul, (2) local Raspberry Pi-based mesh networks to distribute connectivity to student households within a 3km radius using open-source mesh routing firmware, (3) an offline-first open source curriculum server that caches Wikipedia, Khan Academy, MIT OCW, and national-curriculum-aligned content locally so learning continues during satellite signal interruption, and (4) solar + battery power kits sized to keep the full stack operational during grid outages. The architecture is modular: any component can be upgraded independently, and the curriculum stack can be regionally customized with local-language content. Unlike traditional internet buildout which costs $150-400 per student per year for rural fiber, this stack achieves connectivity at approximately $8 per student per year.
