About This Project
Gig and platform workers lose retirement security not because the concept of saving is complicated, but because contributions are tied to a single employer relationship that never forms — a structural mismatch, not a personal failure. This idea proposes a portable benefits account, similar to Singapore's CPF or the multi-employer models already used in the building trades: platforms would be required to contribute a small percentage of each transaction (e.g. 2-4%) into a worker-owned, portable account that travels with the worker regardless of which platform they work through that week. The account itself already exists as a proven financial instrument — the missing piece is simply requiring platforms to pay into it consistently, the same way payroll withholding already happens for traditional employment. A neutral third-party administrator (already standard in multi-employer pension law) would hold and manage the pooled funds, removing the burden from any single platform and eliminating the excuse that portability is technically infeasible.
