About This Project

Launch a dedicated global freshwater biodiversity protection initiative specifically targeting rivers, lakes, wetlands, and groundwater-dependent ecosystems within the 30x30 framework. The initiative would: establish freshwater-specific protection targets (30% of river length and lake area in effective protection by 2030); create a global freshwater biodiversity monitoring network with standardized real-time data sharing; develop freshwater environmental flow standards embedded in transboundary water agreements; and capitalize a $15 billion Freshwater Biodiversity Fund for habitat restoration and protection.
